§ synopsis
The film, in its own words.
A feature documentary shot in Madagascar and commissioned by Polska Fundacja dla Afryki — twelve screenings across eight Polish cities in May 2025, gathering 3,000+ cinema viewers and 1.7 million total media reach.
Tena lavitra — 'really far' in Malagasy — was produced by Adam L. Nurek (Producer, Director of Photography, Editor) for Polska Fundacja dla Afryki, filmed in Antananarivo and across Madagascar between October 2023 and April 2025. It follows Leolidé, who flew in from Paris for a Q&A at every stop of the film's 2025 cinema tour.
Three days on foot — in the heat, in an unknown direction, without sleep, food, water, or a change of clothes.
The film follows Leolidé, who at fifteen survived a fire that destroyed his village deep in Madagascar — and with it, his chance at an education. He decided to reach school on foot. Along the way his life filled with dramatic turns: an armed robbery by bandits, work in illegal gemstone and gold mines, and many brushes with death. He trained as a laboratory technician. Around his journey, the film portrays children working in illegal mines, on rubbish dumps and in small quarries, and people living with leprosy.

§ About Madagascar
Neither paradise nor penguins
Madagascar carries a double misfortune: it is among the poorest countries on earth, yet pop culture casts it as a paradise. The reality is the opposite.
- Over 2 million people are at risk of famine.
- Half of the children in the provinces are malnourished and out of school.
- Hundreds of thousands of children are forced to work to survive.
- Villages are cut off — without water, power, or a doctor.
- Measles, plague, typhus and leprosy persist.
- Even the capital lacks reliable power and water.
